About Word Cross
Word Cross is a compact crossword with Across and Down clues, numbered squares and a small grid. Answers share letters wherever words cross, so solving one clue gives you free letters for another. You type directly into the squares, press Check Answers when every square is filled, and win when all the words are correct. It is a relaxed puzzle that suits a short break.
Tips and strategy
- Begin with the clue you know best. A confident answer puts letters into the grid that make the crossing words easier.
- Use the number of letters shown after each clue. Matching a clue to its exact length rules out many wrong ideas.
- Look at the crossing squares. If a letter you typed would make the crossing word impossible, one of the two answers is wrong.
- Read clues for double meanings. Some clues describe a thing in two different ways, so the answer should satisfy both.
- Check Answers asks for every square to be filled first, so complete the grid and then check, rather than testing partway.
What it exercises
Word Cross calls on vocabulary, general knowledge and flexible thinking about word meanings. Using crossing letters to confirm answers builds cross-checking habits, and working from clues to spelled-out words strengthens spelling and the ability to recall words that fit a pattern.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I fill in Word Cross?
- Click a square and type one letter. Numbers in the grid match the Across and Down clue lists. Where two words cross, they share a letter, so one correct answer helps confirm the other.
- How do the difficulty levels differ?
- Easy uses a three-by-three grid with three-letter words, medium uses five by five and hard uses six by six. Longer words and wider grids mean harder clues and more crossing letters to manage.
- What does Check Answers do?
- It first makes sure every open square has a letter, then compares your grid to the solution. If anything is wrong, it asks you to check the crossing letters. Reveal Answers shows the full grid.
Try next
Word Shift
Rotate letter rows to align them into valid words. Every row starts scrambled, and shifting one row never touches the others, so the puzzle is about finding the right rotation for each row independently.
Anagrid
Rearrange a scrambled 4x4 letter grid so every row and column spells a word. Every row and column is a real word when solved, so swapping letters into place is really solving several overlapping word puzzles at once.
Word Ladder
Change one letter at a time to transform a start word into an end word. Each step must be a real, valid word — the fun is finding the shortest chain of one-letter swaps that bridges two very different words.
