Mind Skill Games — Sharpen Your Mind, One Game at a Time

Objective

Fill a small grid with digits 1-9 so every row and column matches its sum clue. A compact numeric logic puzzle — every digit you place has to satisfy both its row's sum clue and its column's sum clue at once.

How to play

  1. Look at the row and column sum clues.
  2. Type a digit 1-9 into each cell.
  3. Make every row and column add up to its clue, with no repeated digit in a run.

About Grid Sums

Grid Sums is a tiny number crossword on a two-by-two board. Clues around the edge give the total each row and each column must reach, and you fill every cell with a digit from one to nine. The twist is that no digit may repeat within the same row or column, which turns simple addition into a neat little logic puzzle with a single satisfying answer.

Tips and strategy

  • Add the two row clues together and compare with the two column clues. Both totals count the same four cells, so they should match.
  • Remember the no-repeat rule. A row clue like eight cannot be four plus four, which rules out an easy guess.
  • Start with the smallest clue. Small totals have few digit pairs, so one or two options are all you need to test.
  • Pick a value for one cell, then work out the others from the clues. A wrong first guess usually shows up as a contradiction quickly.
  • Press Check Answer once all four cells are filled, and read the feedback, which reminds you about the no-repeat rule.

What it exercises

Grid Sums exercises addition, subtraction and simultaneous constraint thinking. Because each cell serves a row and a column, it shows how to propagate a guess through connected equations, a basic skill behind algebra and puzzle solving in general. It rewards careful checking at every step.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Grid Sums?
Type a digit from one to nine into each of the four cells so every row and column adds up to its clue. Press Check Answer to find out whether you have solved it.
Can digits repeat in Grid Sums?
Not inside the same row or column. The two digits in any row must differ, and the two digits in any column must differ as well.
What do the arrows next to the numbers mean?
An arrow with a number pointing down above a column is that column's target sum, and an arrow pointing right beside a row is that row's target sum.
