Objective
The classic naval guessing game against the computer — hide your five-ship fleet on a 10x10 grid, then take turns firing at hidden squares until one side has sunk every ship. Fewer shots and a tougher opponent score more.
How to play
- Shuffle your fleet (or tap a ship in "Your fleet" to rotate it), then press Start battle.
- Tap a square in Enemy Waters to fire. A red hit means part of a ship is there; a white dot is a miss.
- The computer fires back at your fleet after every shot of yours.
- Sink all five enemy ships before yours are sunk. Fewer shots and a harder opponent give a higher score.
- Want a human opponent? Press Play a friend and send them the invite link — you each hide a fleet and take turns firing.
About Battleship
Battleship here is the classic naval hunt against the computer. Each side hides a fleet of five ships (lengths 5, 4, 3, 3 and 2) on a 10 by 10 grid, and you take turns calling shots at hidden squares. A red hit means you found part of a ship, a white dot means open water, and the first side to sink every enemy ship wins. It is a game of deduction, probability and patience.
Tips and strategy
- Fire in a checkerboard pattern while hunting. Every ship is at least two squares long, so skipping every other square still finds each one while halving the squares to check.
- Once you get a hit, test the four neighbors. When two hits line up, keep following that line in both directions until the ship is sunk.
- Remember which ships are still afloat. If only the Destroyer (2) is left, a gap of three or more squares cannot hold it, so skip those areas.
- Hide your own fleet in a way that is not predictable. Ships placed edge to edge or clustered in a corner are easier to find than a scattered layout.
- Higher difficulty makes the computer smarter, not luckier. On Hard it works out the most likely square from every miss, so expect a real fight.
What it exercises
Battleship exercises deductive reasoning and probability thinking. Every shot gives information, so you practice updating a mental map, ruling out possibilities and choosing the move that reveals the most.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you win Battleship?
- Sink all five of the computer's ships before it sinks yours. A ship is sunk when every one of its squares has been hit.
- Can I choose where my ships go?
- Press Shuffle fleet until you like the layout, or tap any ship in Your fleet before the battle starts to rotate it.
- How is the score worked out?
- Winning scores more for fewer shots, more of your own fleet still afloat, and a harder computer opponent. Losing still scores a little for every enemy ship square you hit.
- Can I play Battleship against a friend?
- Yes. Press Play a friend and send the invite link. You each hide a fleet and press Ready, then take turns firing. Your fleet never leaves your own browser: your game answers your friend's shots and reveals the fleet at the end so the answers can be checked. The match expires after 5 days.
