Three consecutive odd integers have a property: the product of the first and third integers is 33 less than eight times the middle integer. What is the middle integer?
5
Working backwards from the square of 100, the square root can be 10 or -10. If (3x - 5)^2 = 100, then 3x - 5 = 10 (or -10). Testing 10: 3x - 5 = 10 gives 3x = 15, so x = 5. Testing -10: 3x - 5 = -10 gives 3x = -5, which is not a whole number. Since we want a positive integer, the number is 5.
