A farmer needs to cross a river with a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage, but his boat can only hold himself and one item at a time. If left alone, the wolf eats the goat, and the goat eats the cabbage. However, the wolf is terrified of cabbages and will refuse to stay on the same shore as one if the farmer is absent. How does he cross safely?
Take the goat first. Return alone. Take the wolf across, but bring the goat back. Leave the goat, take the cabbage across, and finally return to get the goat.
By managing the wolf's fear of the cabbage and keeping the goat away from both when unsupervised, the farmer ensures nothing is eaten.
