A museum guard reported being tied up and gagged by art thieves at 10 PM. Detective Owens arrived and noticed the guard's digital wristwatch was still beeping loudly with its hourly chime set for 11 PM. Owens smiled and arrested the guard for staging the robbery. Why?
If the guard had been tied up and unable to move since 10 PM, he would have disabled or ignored the watch, or the fact that he was conscious and active enough to let the watch chime undisturbed exposed his collusion.
More simply, a guard who is supposedly incapacitated would have had his hands free to turn off an annoying hourly alarm, or the alarm wouldn't have been left ticking if he was an innocent victim.
